World's oldest wine found in Roman tomb in Spain

MOSCOW, June 18 The world's oldest wine, about two thousand years old, was discovered in a Roman tomb at restoration work on a house in southern Spain, according to an article published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.
«The discovery in 2019 of a two-thousand-year-old urn containing a reddish liquid in a Roman tomb in Carmona, southern Spain, was quite exceptional and unexpected. Archaeochemical examination of the liquid suggests it is the oldest ancient wine preserved in liquid condition,» the article says.
It is noted that after chemical analysis, the researchers concluded that the wine found was white, and they found polyphenols typical for this type of wine, as well as characteristic minerals. It is noteworthy that, according to the conclusions presented in the article, the chemical composition of the discovered ancient Roman wine is not much different from modern wines currently produced in the south of Spain.
