MOSCOW, June 26 The US demands to the founder of the Wikileaks site Julian Assange to delete certain information are an attempt by Washington to save face and image, experts interviewed say.
Earlier, The Guardian newspaper reported that a condition of the deal for Assange's release was that he would order Wikileaks to destroy certain information. On Wednesday morning, Telegram channels reported that Wikileaks had deleted the email archive of the Democratic National Committee.
Associate Professor of the Department of American Studies at St. Petersburg State University Grigory Yarygin, in a conversation with the agency, emphasized that it is impossible to remove something from the network once it has gotten there, and the United States understands this.
«Therefore, this is an attempt to save face in a bad game. On the one hand, the release of Assange plays to strengthen the image of Biden (US President — ed.). But it turns out that Washington has been engaged in persecution and exaggerated the danger of Assange’s activities,” Yarygin said.
He added that if Assange is now being released, it means that his threat to American security was at least exaggerated.
«Therefore, apparently, the political threat was greater than the threat to national security. And that is why the deal is subject to different conditions,» the expert concluded.
Another expert, leading researcher at the Center for Security Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Konstantin Blokhin, noted that the states chose a balanced option when releasing Assange.
«Neither ours, nor yours. We will release him, but he must delete the archives. But the release itself is a step by the democrats to save face, because otherwise he would have become a sacred victim,» — concluded Blokhin.
Assange was released on bail from a British prison the day before after agreeing with US authorities on a partial plea of guilty in exchange for a reduced sentence to five years already spent in prison.
