MOSCOW, June 26Global military spending in 2023 was a record high since 1990 and reached an average of $306 per person, according to the Roscongress report “Fragmentation and Weak Growth: Global Economic Trends 2024,” which was reviewed by.
“The global military burden, defined as military spending as a share of global GDP, increased from 2.2% in 2022 to 2.3% in 2023. Average military spending as a share of government spending rose 0.4 percentage points last year. to 6.9%, and global military spending per capita was the highest since 1990 at $306,” the report said, citing data from the Stockholm Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). 
< br />Experts note that in 2023, global military spending increased for the ninth year in a row, reaching a total of $2.443 trillion. «An annual increase of 6.8% was the highest since 2009 and pushed global spending to its highest level in SIPRI's record period,» the document said.
On average, according to the authors, last year the largest military burden fell on the states of the Middle East — 4.2% of GDP. They were followed by countries in Europe (2.8%), Africa (1.9%), Asia and Oceania (1.7%), and the Americas (1.2%). 
“While spending on advanced weapons and military equipment involves heavy R&D funding, spending on ammunition, projectiles and other items that are quickly consumed provide little added value. And financing increased military spending may require governments to increase debt or tax increases. In turn, tax increases can lead to a slowdown in GDP growth,” the document notes.
But the main risks for global growth, according to the authors, come from the process of fragmentation that the world economy is currently experiencing. “Various macro-zones are emerging, competing with each other in the financial, trade, technology and other industries. Associated geo-economic trends create significant risks of slowing global GDP growth, reducing company profitability and increasing inflation in the largest economies,” the report says.
