Police in India have launched an investigation after a man allegedly identified and cremated the body of his «wife» only to find her alive days later, the Deccan Herald reports.
The bizarre case of mistaken identity occurred after Ram Sumer, 60, reportedly alerted authorities that his wife, Phulmati, had gone missing. The man claimed that she had left her parents' home on June 15 but never returned, prompting him to file a missing person's case.
Four days after the initial complaint was filed, a woman's body was found near a market in Bansgaon. Sumer was asked to identify the body and he confirmed that the remains were those of his late wife. She was then cremated.
However, an autopsy revealed that the cremated woman had been strangled, prompting police to investigate further. Believing that the deceased was still Phulmati, officers tracked her mobile phone in an attempt to catch the killer. However, they were surprised to find that the allegedly dead woman's phone was active for about 11 hours, 600 km away.
The man later confirmed that Phulmati was alive and that he had decided to take her with him.
Police confirmed that Phulmati and her husband were reunited on Saturday, June 22.
