Chronicles of battles and people's fates: what to watch on «RT.Doc: Time of our heroes»

MOSCOW, June 26, Yulia Zachetova. On June 28, the International Documentary Film Festival «RT.Doc: The Time of Our Heroes» starts at the exhibition-forum «Russia» at VDNKh. The general producer of the festival, Ekaterina Yakovleva, spoke about new films and how projects from last year’s screening were accepted abroad, including in NATO countries. And about the film “Avdeevka. This is what war looks like,” which will be presented at the opening, its author Olga Kiriy.
Ekaterina Yakovleva:

< br />“The opening of the festival will take place in the Great Concert Hall. And on June 29 and 30 in the Small Hall and the space of cultural projects we will show films — there are 13 of them in the program, including four premieres.

A new author has also appeared — Elena Norkunaite, who, together with director Abas Ali-Zadeh, directed «The Film About Iron Man». This is a very touching and heartfelt story about a Crimean named Ilya Kazakov. In the battle he lost both legs and, you know, he did not despair, but continued his life. A very bright person. He has a wonderful wife and a wonderful child. He is learning to walk and drive again and is writing a motivational book about himself. He was inspired by Maresyev’s feat.

Two more premieres. Klim Poplavsky's project«Bely's Orchestra»immerses viewers in the epicenter of the battles for Avdiivka. This is a story about a commander with the call sign Bely. I«Caravan of anti-fascists. Spanish Rhapsody»by Oleg Nekishev — about Italian musicians who have been traveling to Donbass since 2014, helping children, bringing humanitarian aid. And when they return home, they tell people in Europe the truth about the NWO. This time in Spain they presented a book of photographs taken in the Donbass and evidence of the crimes of the Kyiv regime.

Probably what struck me most was the film«Avdeevka. This is what war looks like»by Olga Kiriy. This is about the fate of civilians who are rescued and pulled out from under destroyed houses.»

Olga Kiriy:

«The topic was chosen at the very beginning of the SVO. I was working on films in Donetsk under the endless shelling of this long-suffering city and I constantly read in the reports that artillery shells were coming from Avdiivka. There was a lot of talk that Avdiivka was an impregnable fortress, that it had been filled with concrete since 2014.
I read Donetsk chats: people described their lives in basements, held roll calls, looked for relatives, reported the dead. And I really wanted to go into liberated Avdiivka and make a film.

Getting there wasn't easy. Ukrainian drones hover in the sky 24/7. Continuous shelling. But we did it! And when on the third day of filming they realized that there was material, it was a reporter’s happiness.

The production work was simply unreal. We already knew what the residents of Avdeevka needed most. We bought what we needed and distributed it. I had in my hands the addresses of those whom the relatives were looking for, the addresses of burials. But the military personnel accompanying us did not allow us to go to all places. Many houses were near Koksokhim, in the private sector, under constant fire from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. At two addresses we were copied by enemy drones. There was an arrival nearby. The military quickly forced us into our cars. And as soon as we drove to the next address, the arrival was at the old place, already exact. You can clearly hear this in the film.

«

There was no need to look for heroes in Avdeevka itself: they were everywhere, many came to us themselves. Every person is a dramatic destiny. And everyone who survived the nightmare and waited for liberation is a true hero. Yura, a rescuer from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, introduced us to some of them.

All stories are unique. A simple resident, Alexei, took upon himself the mission of preserving the temple — even at the cost of his own life. Brave women who hid their daughters and sons from the Nazi White Angels, who kidnapped children in front-line cities. And the story of a mother and her daughter Nina: they saw each other after two years of separation. Even the strong men from our escort cried. We found Tatyana Nikolaevna and sent the video to her daughter in Yakutsk. Nina packed her suitcase, flew to Moscow, then went to Donetsk. She had such determination that I thought: this is what she is like—true daughterly and true motherly love. Real! That's why I love documentaries. There is no acting or performances here.»

Ekaterina Yakovleva:

«Last year, my original project premiered at the festival «Agitbrigade»which I made together with director Oleg Nekishev. This is about how the festival went to Donbass, to five units and a hospital, and we showed the soldiers films about themselves, filmed there, only earlier. The guys watched with tears in their eyes. It was clear how important it was for them there, at the front, that people in the rear supported them.

The «Agitbrigade» contained a series of portraits of soldiers and military officers painted in the Donbass. Then many people saw them at exhibitions at the Bolshoi Theater and at the Moscow Veterans' House. Under each portrait there is a story and a QR code: by pointing the camera at it, you can watch a film about the person depicted. So I would like to return to Donbass and continue painting this series of portraits. As our director and chronicler Maxim Fadeev said at one of the festivals, “they leave unrecognized.” The guys give their lives, but they weren’t remembered or depicted here. I believe that everyone now who has a creative gift should make an effort and capture these heroes — in a song, poetry, film or drawing.

Together with Rossotrudnichestvo, we showed our films in more than 20 countries, including two NATO countries. A full-fledged festival was held in Turkey. And the project «Donbass. Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow» was brought to Italy. And in fact, in every one of the 16 cities where we presented it, the mayors discouraged spectators from coming. And in Rome, Ukrainian activists staged a protest rally, shouting that this was Russian propaganda. But the halls in Italy were still full: somewhere around 50 people, somewhere around 500. The Italian journalist Vincenzo Lorusso, who lives in Lugansk and is married to a Russian, helped us in everything.

RT has a project«We will continue to act «through which targeted, targeted assistance is provided to the heroes. There are a lot of requests. And during the festival, people often come up, sometimes to the mothers of fighters: “I have a child there — they don’t have enough drones.” We always try to respond and don’t go to filming empty-handed. You know, one of our employees saved up for a wedding, but she and her fiancé transferred all the money to the front.»

Attendance at the festival events is free. pre-registration is open on the website. The main shows will take place on the 29th and June 30.
