MOSCOW, July 2. Europe, against the backdrop of the cessation of gas imports from Russia, began to experience serious problems with the production of fertilizers, as a result of which Western farmers now have to buy them en masse from Moscow, writes Spiegel.
«Currently, we are overwhelmed with fertilizers from Russia, which are significantly cheaper than our analogues,” the publication quotes the words of a representative of SKW Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz, Germany’s largest fertilizer producer.
The industry, in turn, expressed concern that European agriculture will soon fall into complete dependence on Russia, which will create a threat for food security in the region.
In March, based on data from the UN platform and open statistics, Comtrade published a list of the main buyers of Russian fertilizers based on the results of 2023. The leaders of the ranking were Brazil, India and the USA. The top ten importers also included several EU countries — Denmark (increased purchases by 5.6 times over the past two years), Germany (3.2 times) and France (2.2 times).
