The Verkh-Isetsky Court of Yekaterinburg sentenced Denis Galiyakhmetov, a participant in the war in Ukraine, in the case of murder of a cellmate in a pre-trial detention center, the press service of the court told It's My City and 66.RU.
Galiyakhmetov was found guilty of the murder of Georgy Koryukov, which occurred on November 5, 2023 in the Yekaterinburg pre-trial detention center-1 (part 1 of article 105 of the Criminal Code).
In October of the same year, the Yekaterinburg Garrison Military Court convicted Galiyakhmetov under the article on unauthorized abandonment of a unit for more than a month (Part 5 of Article 337 of the Criminal Code). Taking into account the previous sentence, Galiyakhmetov was sentenced to ten years in a maximum security colony.
In the murder trial, Galiyakhmetov said that he lived in a cell with Lev Shopp for several months, and on November 4, 2023, Koryukov was transferred to them, who “laughed hysterically for no reason, broke down the door to the toilet, dismantled the brick laying the bathroom, hitting rags with bricks and washing my hands in the toilet.”
As 66.RU wrote, the case materials stated that Koryukov was sent to a pre-trial detention center in October 2023, after which the management of the detention center transferred the man from cell to cell 13 times because he had conflicts with his cellmates. According to Galiyakhmetov, he asked to transfer Koryukov to another cell, but the pre-trial detention center staff refused him.
According to Galiyakhmetov, on the evening of November 5, Koryukov hit Shopp. “I stood up and said that you can’t beat your cellmates. A fight started,” explained Galiyakhmetov.
“Koryukov was half a head taller than me. I was afraid of him and tried to make him lose consciousness. When I got off him, he slid off the bed onto the floor and tried to get up. So I started kicking him in the back of the head again. When the pre-trial detention center officers entered the cell, Koryukov was still showing signs of life,” 66.RU quoted Galiyakhmetov.
The deceased’s relatives claim that Koryukov had a disability due to a mental illness.
Galiyakhmetov’s lawyer, Evgenia Krotova, believes that the actions of the FSIN employees, who “placed Koryukov at the moment of exacerbation of his psychiatric illness” in the same cell with Galiyakhmetov and Shopp, fall under the article of negligence. The sister of the deceased, Svetlana Shorina, said the same thing.
In November 2023, the Federal Penitentiary Service conducted an internal audit — the pre-trial detention center employees were reprimanded. “There is evidence that the victim is behaving mentally inappropriately. But the pre-trial detention center employees did not have documentary evidence indicating that the victim had a psychiatric illness,” a representative of the FSIN department for the Sverdlovsk region told 66.RU.
