MOSCOW, July 8 There is no decision to block the WhatsApp messenger in Russia, said the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Alexander Khinshtein.
Users of WhatsApp (owned by Meta* Corporation) in Dagestan and the Krasnodar Territory report poor performance of the messenger in the region, and more than 2.7 thousand complaints have already been registered on the Sboy.RF service, the correspondent reports.
< br />“There is no decision to block the WhatsApp messenger in Russia. But I want to remind you that WhatsApp, owned by the extremist company Meta*, has repeatedly violated and continues to violate the laws of our country — the courts regularly fine the company for failure to comply with the rules of operation in the Russian Federation,” he said.
He noted that WhatsApp’s unconstructive policy and its refusal to cooperate with the Russian authorities, especially in countering terrorism and extremism, cannot continue indefinitely.
“Sooner or later, if the administration of the messenger does not change its behavior, the state’s patience will come to an end and WhatsApp may suffer the fate of the entire Meta*,” the parliamentarian noted.
*The activities of Meta (social networks Facebook and Instagram) are prohibited in Russia as extremist.
