In early March, NBC Los Angeles reported that a United Airlines Boeing 777-200 flying from San Francisco to Japan lost a tire during takeoff and was forced to make an emergency landing in Los Angeles. The missing tire was found on the grounds of the San Francisco airport. In mid-March, Newsweek magazine reported that United Airlines planes had encountered technical problems 10 times in the previous two weeks.
