A couple was detained in Australia on charges of preparing for espionage for Russia

Australian Federal Police detained two citizens in Brisbane accused of preparing espionage for Russia. This is reported on the department's website.

The detainees are a married couple, both were born in Russia; several years ago they received Australian citizenship, having lived in the country for more than ten years. According to ABC TV channel, we are talking about 40-year-old Kira Koroleva and 62-year-old Igor Koroleva.

Kira Koroleva served in the Australian Army for several years as an information technology specialist and had access to classified information, police said.

According to the department, since 2023 the Queen has been on a long vacation and “made an undeclared trip to Russia.” She told her husband how to log into her work account and asked him to send her materials to her personal email.

According to the investigation, the Queen was going to transfer the data to the Russian authorities. It is unknown whether she managed to do this, the investigation is ongoing, the police said in a statement.

The spouses were arrested and each was charged with one count of preparing for espionage. Both face up to 15 years in prison. The Australian Ministry of Defense reported that it is aware of Koroleva’s arrest — she was suspended from service and access to databases.
