For the second time, the investigation asked for the release from the pre-trial detention center of General Ivan Popov, accused in a fraud case.

The investigation for the second time asked to release the former commander of the 58th Army, Major General Ivan Popov, from the pre-trial detention center under house arrest. Mediazona drew attention to the card on the website of the 235th Garrison Military Court.

Popov is in a pre-trial detention center on charges of fraud on an especially large scale and forgery of official duties (part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code and article 292 of the Criminal Code).

Another person involved in the fraud case was taken into custody — businessman Sergei Moiseev. The investigation also asks him to be released under house arrest.

Popov was sent to a pre-trial detention center on May 17. A week later, a hearing was held to appeal the preventive measure — the defense asked to release the general, but the court refused. The day before, the investigator himself petitioned the court to transfer Popov to house arrest; on May 27, the judge did not grant this request and left him in custody. The general's term of detention in the pre-trial detention center expires in five days, on July 16.

According to the investigation, Popov was involved in the theft of more than 1.7 thousand tons of “rolled metal products purchased by the military-civil administration of the Zaporozhye region for the equipment of engineering defensive structures on the line of combat contact.” Initially, the damage was estimated at 130 million rubles; later the lawyer said that this amount was “adjusted” to 105 million rubles.

Z-channel “Two Majors” claimed that Popov’s case involved “an entrepreneur from the Krasnodar Territory” who “sold purchased material assets outside the region” and “a high-ranking official [of the Southern Military District]” . These people were not mentioned in the Investigative Committee's message. Kommersant writes that in the first case we are talking about businessman Sergei Moiseev, and in the second — about Lieutenant General Oleg Tsokov, who died in the war.
