MOSCOW, July 12«Yandex Maps» began to display the names of settlements in countries where the Cyrillic alphabet is used, only in Russian — this is an experimental update; previously, two spelling options were displayed on the diagram — translated into Russian and in the original, the company's press service said in a statement.

"In "Yandex Maps" released an experimental update that changes the display of settlement names. If earlier the diagram showed two spelling options — translated into Russian and in the original, now the names are indicated in only one language,” the message says.
At the first stage, the innovations will apply to users of the Russian version service. They will be used in countries with Cyrillic writing, in which the spellings of localities are similar from language to language and recognizable in any of them — for example, in Belarus and Bulgaria. In the future, the list of countries with Cyrillic alphabet, in which names will be indicated in only one language, may be expanded taking into account user feedback, the company added.
“For Russian users, place names in countries with Cyrillic writing do not need to be duplicated in the original language, since they have almost identical spelling. Therefore, we abandoned them, which improved the perception of the map at different scales,” the press service reported.
It was also noted that the service team adheres to the principle of translocality — “we adapt to the peculiarities of use in each country.”
