The reason for the replacement was an injury to the right leg. Messi was injured after a collision with Colombian defender Santiago Arias in the 36th minute of the match. The Argentine received medical assistance, after which he was able to continue playing. In the second half, Messi fell badly and again felt discomfort in his leg. He was replaced by Nicolas Gonzalez in the 66th minute of the match. The 37-year-old forward left the field accompanied by doctors.
