YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, July 15 Russian developers have created an exoskeleton that will help people with amputated legs or paraplegia move, the NTI press service said on the sidelines of Archipelago 2024.
An exoskeleton is an external structure that fits over the legs. It is like an additional frame that supports the legs and helps to move.
“The Russian development team has come up with an exoskeleton for people with double leg amputations, which is controlled both by hand gestures and using specified movement patterns. Thanks to this, the user will safely and comfortably move around any terrain, controlling the control in different ways depending on the situation,” — reported the press service.
«How does it work? The exoskeleton helps distribute body weight, reducing stress on muscles and joints. This makes movement easier and more stable. Our project is based on the use of several advanced technologies that provide high functionality and ease of use for people with amputations of both legs or paralysis of the lower extremities,” said project leader Anatoly Balabanov.
The exoskeleton imitates the movements of real legs, allowing a person to walk, stand and perform other actions, NTI continued. The prosthesis adapts to changes in gait and load, ensuring smooth and natural movements, the developers specified. Gyroscopes also help the exoskeleton maintain balance and stability. If a person begins to lose balance, gyroscopes immediately correct the movement of the exoskeleton to prevent a fall.
«Imagine a double amputee or paraplegic. With our device, he wears an exoskeleton that supports his body and helps distribute weight evenly. Dynamic prosthetics replace missing legs and allow him to walk almost as he did before. Gyroscopes constantly monitor his movements and help maintain balance, even on an uneven surface,” Balabanov said.
«Archipelago» is an annual design and educational intensive for representatives of technology companies and startups, engineering teams, management teams of regions and universities, representatives of scientific organizations that develop projects in the field of new technologies. In 2024, “Archipelago” will be held in the Sakhalin region from July 8 to July 21. The main venues for the event will be the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and the Pushisty airfield.
