Maxim Marchenko secretly purchased OLED microdisplays for Russia and ended up in prison

The Federal Court of the State of New York sentenced Russian citizen Maxim Marchenko to three years in prison for smuggling dual-use microelectronics into Russia, TASS reported .
His lawyer, Kerry Lawrence, confirmed the verdict and said there would be no appeal. However, the defense insists that the time Marchenko served in custody should be taken into account so that he can return to his family.
It is interesting to note that Marchenko pleaded guilty to money laundering and smuggling of dual-use goods. He operated several shell companies in Hong Kong. Marchenko and two accomplices purchased goods, in particular, OLED microdisplays, for his front companies. At the same time, the fact that the products were intended to be sent to Russia was carefully hidden. The goods were issued to final recipients in Hong Kong, China, etc.
Despite the fact that Marchenko’s lawyers do not intend to appeal the court’s decision, the public continues to discuss this case. Many have expressed the view that the government overestimated Marchenko's actions, while others support strict punishment in such situations.
It should be noted that Marchenko's arrest occurred in September last year, and in March of this year he admitted your guilt.
