The EU agreed to extend anti-Russian sanctions, a source said

BRUSSELS, JULY 17 Permanent representatives of countries — Members of the European Union at a meeting on Wednesday agreed to extend for another six months (until the end of January 2025) the economic sanctions imposed in 2014 against Russia, which have since been expanded many times, a European source said.

"The permanent representatives agreed all points, approval (at the Council of EU Foreign Ministers — ed.) is expected on Monday (July 22 — ed.),» the agency's interlocutor said.

The last time such sanctions were extended at the end of January for six months — until July 31, 2024.

The West has increased sanctions pressure on Russia over Ukraine, which has led to rising prices for electricity, fuel and food in Europe and the United States. Since the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine in February 2022, the EU has already implemented 14 packages of sanctions against Russia.

Russia has repeatedly stated that the country will cope with the sanctions pressure, which continues to intensify. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously noted that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy of the West, and sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy. According to him, the main goal of the West is to worsen the lives of millions of people. In Western countries themselves, opinions have been voiced more than once that sanctions are ineffective.
