The Ministry of Justice has added the American think tank Carnegie Endowment for International Peace to the register of «undesirable organizations.» The decision itself was made by the Prosecutor General's Office, but the department did not publicly announce the ban.
The Moscow Times, which the Prosecutor General's Office declared «undesirable» on July 10, was also added to the register. The department explained its decision by the fact that, in its opinion, the publication's work «is aimed at discrediting the decisions of the leadership of the Russian Federation in both foreign and domestic policy.»
In April 2023, the Ministry of Justice recognized the Carnegie Endowment as a «foreign agent.» The ministry cited the fact that the foundation «discredited» the Russian army and spread «fakes» about the country's government policies aimed at «destructive ideological influence» on Russians as the reasons for adding the organization to this register.
The Carnegie Endowment is an American think tank. The Carnegie Moscow Center has been operating in Russia since 1994. After Russia began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Ministry of Justice closed the foundation's branch along with divisions of 14 other organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, «for violating the law.»
