MOSCOW, July 23 The intensification of cyber attacks on Russian banks suggests that one or more groups of attackers have joined the politically motivated attackers, said Daniil Shcherbakov, Deputy General Director of Servicepipe .
Earlier on Tuesday, there was a failure in the services of Rosbank and Raiffeisenbank.
“
"By 15.30, attacks on credit institutions suddenly increased significantly in volume — up to 300 Gbit/s. The pro-Ukrainian hacktivists who claimed responsibility for DDoSing Russian banks in the summer of 2024 do not have such capacity. The increase in volume suggests that politically motivated attackers have been joined by one or more groups of attackers,” the expert said.
He added that at the beginning of 2024, there was a shift in the interest of hacktivists from attacks on the largest credit institutions in favor of regional players and microfinance organizations, however, in the summer of 2024, hacktivists’ interest in large players returned — since the end of June, multi-vector “carpet attacks” have been recorded on the largest players in the industry. This is the second wave of attacks on the financial sector since the beginning of summer.
«At the same time, attackers choose those targets where they can quickly achieve degradation or unavailability of services. If the attack does not bring the desired result, the attackers switch to other players, which is what we observed today,» — noted Shcherbakov.
