On the evening of July 24, the US President addressed the Americans, announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race. Joe Biden's speech lasted 11 minutes. The President of the States read the text from the teleprompter.
Biden described his decision as “a matter of protecting democracy” and emphasized that to unite the party he needed to sacrifice personal ambitions. “I value this position, but I love the country more,” he added.
“I believe my accomplishments as President, my leadership on the world stage, my vision for America's future all merit a second term. But nothing is more important than saving our democracy, not even personal ambition. That’s why I decided to pass the baton to a new generation (Harris is now 59 years old — editor’s note) to unite our nation,” Biden said.
In his speech, the president also expressed support for Vice President Kamala Harris, who will run for president as a Democratic candidate.
“She is experienced, tough, capable. She has been an incredible partner and leader for our country. Now the choice is yours.”
On July 21, Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race and expressed support for Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate.
Donald Trump commented on the appeal Biden, saying his speech was «barely understandable and very poor.» Trump also called Biden and Kamala Harris «the greatest disgrace to America like never before.»
