The first person with a Neuralink brain implant talks about his experience

WASHINGTON, July 25 The first person with a Neuralink brain implant, Noland Arbo, said that he uses the technology at least ten hours a day and doesn't feel tired.
“I don’t get tired and I think… I want to use it (the Neuralink implant — ed.) all the time,” said a participant in the experiment in an interview.

“One day I couldn’t sleep, and at two o’clock in the morning I turned on and remained active for 17 hours — I played, recharged a couple of times (the implant is wirelessly charged — ed.) and stayed like that until midnight the next day,” says the man, clarifying that This day was an exception, but he usually takes up to ten hours a day in total, four of which are work sessions with Neuralink developers.

«We work four hours Monday through Friday — these are structured sessions with Neuralink where we do research, but the other six hours or more that I spend with him myself, using Neuralink in real life, also benefit the research «, says the agency's interlocutor.
Arbaugh was paralyzed seven years ago when he suffered spinal cord damage in an accident. In January 2024, he became the first person to receive an implant in the motor area of the brain as part of the Neuralink clinical trial. A small device wirelessly transmits the patient's brain signals to a computer. According to the company, the technology should help people with movement problems regain the ability to function again and do so literally “with the power of thought.”

“I imagine the movement I want to do, Neuralink receives signals from my brain, and it translates them into what I’m trying to do, it learns what I’m trying to do,” a participant in the experiment describes the process. “For example, on the screen they show me a hand, and it moves to the right, left or up, I follow it, and the algorithm matches what I do with what it wants me to do, and every time I, for example, if I want to move to the right, the cursor will move to the right,” he explains.

According to Arbo, gradually the experiment reached a new level when “I no longer try to make the movement itself so that the cursor moves, I just think about making it move, and it moves,” says he calls it «imaginary movement.»

As Neuralink owner Elon Musk said earlier in July, the initial results of the Arbo test give reason to believe that soon “Neuralink owners will function more efficiently than ordinary people.” Musk also said that in the coming weeks, another participant in the experiment will receive the Neuralink implant.
