CHISINAU, July 29 All opposition deputies of Moldova left the ceremonial session of parliament, dedicated to Constitution Day, in protest against the violation of the fundamental law of the republic by the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PSA).
Thirty years ago, on July 29, 1994, a constitution was adopted in Moldova, which enshrined the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, sovereignty, neutrality, and the principle of the rule of law. On this occasion, the parliament of the republic organized a ceremonial session, the broadcast of which was conducted live on the website of the legislative assembly.
The opposition bloc «Victory» held a protest action in defense of the Constitution of Moldova in front of the parliament building before the start of the session. The participants of the action came out with black inflatable balloons containing the articles of the country's basic law that the ruling party violates. Afterwards, the deputies of the «Victory» bloc continued the action in defense of the constitution in the parliament session hall. At their workplaces, they placed posters: «PDS destroyed democracy», «Restore state sovereignty», «PDS violated all constitutional rights». After that, they left the session hall in protest.
Later, they were joined by deputies of another opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists. Before leaving the hall, the bloc representatives unfurled posters at their workplaces accusing PDS of usurping power and hypocrisy.
The opposition in Moldova has been holding protests since May 2022, demanding the resignation of the government and President Maia Sandu, who is the informal leader of the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). The protesters accuse the country's authorities of failing to cope with the crisis in the economy and energy sector, as well as of putting pressure on the opposition. As a result of the authorities' actions, the opposition party «Shor» was banned, and representatives of other political formations, including the Socialist Party, «Renaissance» and «Chance», regularly face searches and detention of their supporters.
