MOSCOW, July 29One of the clear signs of fraud is phrases that create a sense of urgency or panic, as well as requests for confidential information and offers of «profitable» deals and prizes, said Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy.
«One of the clear signs of fraud is phrases that create a sense of urgency or panic. For example, scammers may say: «Your account will be frozen in an hour if you do not provide information,» or «A lawsuit has been filed against you, call us immediately.» Such statements are designed to provoke you to hasty actions without due consideration,» he said.
< br />He noted that another sign is requests for confidential information. «Real organizations will never ask for your passwords, credit card numbers, PIN codes or other personal data over the phone. If the caller asks: «Tell me your bank account password» or «dictate your credit card number and the code on the back» — this is a clear sign of fraud. Real employees of the bank or other institutions will always offer you other, more secure ways to confirm your identity,» Nemkin said.
Offers of «profitable» deals and prizes should also be a warning sign. According to the deputy, scammers often use phrases like: «You've won the lottery, but you need to pay a small tax to get the prize,» or «We're offering you a loan with incredibly low interest rates, just confirm your details.»
«The fourth sign is unusual payment or money transfer methods. If the caller says something like, 'You need to transfer money through Western Union,' or, 'Buy gift cards and tell us the codes,' this also indicates a scam. Legitimate Companies and Institutions they will not ask you to use such payment methods. These methods are popular among scammers because they allow them to hide their tracks and complicate the return of money,” the deputy noted.
According to the deputy, profanity or confusing speech, as well as the use of technical terms, should also cause concern. Fraudsters may try to confuse you with complex technical terms or speak with an accent, misspelling the names of organizations.
«Phrases like: «We are updating your security, so we need your IP address and MAC address» or «Your account has been compromised, immediately tell us the verification code that will be sent to your phone» should raise suspicion. Always It’s useful to double-check information and call organizations back using official contacts,” he concluded.
