Volodin proposed increasing the length of military service to two years for foreigners who have received Russian citizenship

State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin proposed amending the legislation on military service for foreigners who have received Russian citizenship. This was reported on the website of the lower house of parliament.

“The State Duma is putting forward initiatives to strengthen control over the performance of military service by new citizens of Russia. For them, the term of service in the army may be increased to two years and the draft age may be raised,” the press release says.

The amendments are planned to be considered before the end of the current session of the State Duma, which ends on August 5. Volodin instructed the Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Irina Yarovaya, the head of the Defense Committee Andrei Kartapolov, the first deputy head of the United Russia faction Dmitry Vyalkin, and the chairman of the Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology, and Communications Alexander Khinshtein to prepare the amendments.

In February, deputies Alexei Zhuravlev, Alexander Borodai, and Mikhail Sheremet introduced a bill that proposed raising the maximum age for conscription into the army for men who have received Russian passports. Instead of 30 years, they proposed increasing the figure to 50. The State Duma did not consider this bill; it is now in the archive.
