MOSCOW, July 31 Israeli intelligence services will strengthen the security of compatriot athletes at the Paris Olympics following assassination attempts on Hezbollah and Hamas leaders, the Ynet news portal reported on Wednesday.
«The Shin Bet General Security Service (Shin Bet) will strengthen the security of the Israeli delegation at the Paris Olympics, and additional security will be sent to protect delegation members in the Olympic village and beyond,» the portal said in a statement.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Palestinian Hamas movement reported the death of Ismail Haniyeh in an Israeli strike on his residence in the Iranian capital Tehran. According to the movement's statement, he was killed in an Israeli «raid» on his residence after he attended the inauguration ceremony of Iran's new president.
On Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces attacked a southern suburb of Beirut to kill a senior Hezbollah commander who the IDF said was responsible for the attack that killed 12 children. The Russian Foreign Ministry called Israel's strikes on Lebanon a violation of international law.
Earlier in November 2023, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed the Mossad foreign intelligence service to target Hamas leaders around the world. The head of state's statement came amid a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas brokered by Qatar.
