MOSCOW, July 31 A huge fire is raging in the Monte Mario hill area in Rome, and residential buildings and offices are being evacuated, the Repubblica newspaper reports.
Clouds of black smoke are rising above the hill. As a precaution, people were evacuated from the Astronomical Observatory building, the Carabinieri station, and the RAI television channel office. The broadcast was interrupted.
Residents of houses on streets close to the epicenter of the fire were also urgently evacuated. Residents are reporting «continuous explosions.» Several cars have already caught fire, and there are concerns that the fire will spread to other cars parked on the street. The fire is reportedly spreading toward the terrace of the Zodiaco restaurant.
The fire is believed to have started in the slums of Romeo Romei Street. Ten fire crews and two helicopters are involved in extinguishing it. The work of the fire crews is complicated by sudden changes in wind direction.
