«Thanks to investments made by the Obama, Trump, and Biden administrations, the National Nuclear Security Agency was able to deliver more than 200 modernized nuclear weapons to the Pentagon last year. This is the largest single-year delivery since the end of the Cold War,» she said.
Hruby predicted that amid the fight against climate change, there will be a renaissance of nuclear energy. At the same time, advanced nuclear reactors will likely use more highly enriched uranium, which will challenge the current nuclear non-proliferation regime, she said.
The head of the agency also recalled that in 2023, the National Nuclear Security Agency announced the release of an advanced thermonuclear bomb B61-13, which can be carried by both strategic bombers and fighter jets. It is expected to enter service in 2026. In 2025, the United States is going to spend about $ 21 billion on nuclear weapons, Hruby concluded.
In June, US President Joe Biden signed an adjusted nuclear weapons strategy, which placed the main emphasis on competition. Earlier, the owner of the White House asked the US Congress for almost $ 20 billion for the 2025 fiscal year to modernize nuclear weapons, as follows from the presented draft budget of the country.
