Two out of three Muscovites are ready to give up their personal cars

Young people under 24 and women are more likely to use public transport than others

An analytical center conducted a survey examining Moscow residents' views on public transport. The results showed that 65% of road users are ready or at least inclined to give up their personal cars. The decision of city residents, which is not surprising, depends on how close the metro station is to their home or place of work.

Respondents were asked the question: “Imagine the Moscow of the future, where public transport has become as comfortable and fast as possible.” and accessible. In such a situation, are you ready to give up your personal car?'.

38% of respondents stated that they are completely ready to give up their personal car in these conditions. Another 27% noted that they are more likely to give up their personal car. 21% could not answer this question unequivocally, and only 5% of respondents confidently stated their commitment to their personal car.

Women were more inclined to switch to public transport: 42% are ready to completely give up using a car, and 30% are more likely to do so. Among men, 35% are ready to switch to public transport if the conditions are comfortable, and 25% are more likely to do so.

The largest group of people inclined to give up cars turned out to be among the young audience (18-24 years old). The willingness to completely switch to public transport decreases among people of pre-retirement and retirement age: among respondents over 55 years old, only 20% are ready to give up a car, and 35% find it difficult to answer.

The main influence on a particular decision is the presence or absence of a metro station, MCC or MCD near the house. Respondents were asked what distance from the metro could influence their decision to give up a car. If there is a station a maximum of 10 minutes walk from home, 40% are ready to give up the car, 10-15 minutes away – 38%. 18% are ready to give up a car if metro stations, the Moscow Central Circle or Moscow Central Diameters are located within a 15-20 minute walk from home. With high-speed public transport at a distance of 20-25 minutes, only 10% are willing to live without a car.

The most attractive thing for Muscovites from a transport point of view was the presence of a Koltsevaya or Big Circle metro line station near the house. The Moscow Central Circle and the Moscow Central Diameters have a positive effect on car abandonment for only 28% of respondents.

350 people took part in the study. The analysis was carried out based on a random sample by gender, age and district of residence of respondents using an online survey.
