MOSCOW, August 6 Protesters in Bangladesh damaged or destroyed the homes of at least two MPs and 100 politicians from the Awami League party of resigned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Bengali portal UNB reports.
«The homes of two MPs and more than 100 Awami League leaders and activists were damaged or set on fire in the Lalmonirhat region on Monday,» the portal writes, citing the local fire service.
According to UNB, firefighters also removed six charred bodies from one of the buildings; the identities of the victims have not yet been established.
On Monday, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister left their official residence in the capital Dhaka for safer ground amid unrest. News18 reported that Hasina had resigned and flown to the Indian city of Agartala. The Hindu reported that the former prime minister was seeking asylum in the UK. Thousands of protesters also reportedly stormed the palace of Hasina, who had fled Bangladesh.
Protests and demonstrations began in Dhaka and across the country after the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) organization announced a multi-day «non-cooperation campaign» with the government on Sunday. Clashes between anti-government students, police, and government supporters escalated into riots.
