The Supreme Court of Kabardino-Balkaria sentenced a Ukrainian to 12 years in a maximum security penal colony on charges of espionage (Article 276 of the Criminal Code). This was reported by the republic's prosecutor's office.
The name of the accused is unknown. According to information from the court's file, the verdict was handed down on July 15. The court retired to a deliberation room on April 15, but for some reason the hearings were postponed several times.
According to security officials, from April to June 2022, the man was in the Kharkiv region, where he was recruited by employees of the Security Service of Ukraine. According to the prosecution, in the Kupyansk district of the region, which was occupied at that time, he was collecting information about the movements of the Russian army.
The Ukrainian was detained in June 2023 in Nalchik, where he had lived since December 2022.
