«Burning Everywhere, Landings Everywhere»: Kursk Region Residents Talk About Situation in Populated Areas

Many cannot contact their relatives

The fighting in the Kursk region continues. According to the telegram channels of war correspondents, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have occupied the settlements of Nikolayevo-Daryino, Darino and Sverdlikovo in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region. There is no communication with these settlements. In the middle of the day, unverified information was received about the Ukrainian Armed Forces approaching the regional center of Sudzha…

Many cannot contact their relatives

It is quite difficult to find reliable information about the situation in border settlements. The lack of communication and the invasion of gloating Ukrainians in all social networks play a role. The situation can only be judged by the news from Sudzha, where there is still communication.

On the morning of July 7, the Rodnaya Sudzha Telegram channel wrote about the situation as follows: “The city is standing still, there is no khokhol there. Periodic shelling. Be careful when moving! Kamikaze drones are setting up ambushes. There are problems with communication, there is no electricity.” Drones do indeed continue to attack civilians. One of them hit an ambulance near a populated area at night. The driver and paramedic were killed, the doctor was wounded.

Towards evening, an appeal from a priest from Sudzha spread across Telegram channels. “The whole of Sudzha is on fire. Smoke is coming from Zamostye, from the city, from Goncharovka, it’s on fire everywhere. There are planes flying in everywhere,” the man said. He noted that, despite everything, life goes on in the church — all the people who cannot leave or hide in a shelter are gathered there. “The children were just crying, shuddering at every noise, and now they are laughing and playing on the carpets,” the priest said.

There is practically no reliable information on the settlements that, according to military correspondents, were occupied by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Even in Sverdlikovo, the largest of these villages, which has 262 houses. Some write that they are not allowed into Sverdlikovo. Others say that everyone moved out and left their homes. Still others say that their relatives are still there, but there is no connection with them. MK talked to a girl whose relatives remained in this village. This is what she said: “We still have relatives in Sverdlikovo who did not have time to leave. There has been no contact with them since yesterday morning. Then they called for the last time and said that they were being heavily bombed, that everything was bad. There was no evacuation. Those who managed to leave between arrivals left. Mine didn't make it in time for some reason. We don’t know about their fate.”

Some information comes only from those people who managed to get out of these border settlements. One woman said that they hid in the grass from the shelling of their houses. «It was really shocking. I will never forget it,» she notes. One of her neighbors was wounded: «Styopa was wounded, twice in the leg.» They evacuated on their own, moving «through fields and factories.»

In groups, many are trying to figure out how to contact their loved ones. «Help me please. My mother and grandmother live on Zavodskaya. I can't contact them at all. Can someone help contact them and get them out of town? For any fee, please,” writes Tatyana. “We cannot get in touch with the parents from Sverdlikovo either through neighbors or through acquaintances,” reports Natalya. “I haven’t been able to reach my grandmothers on the phone for a day now. If someone has the opportunity to find out what happened to them and take them out, please help,” Elena prays.

Meanwhile, the evacuation of residents of frontline areas continues. «More than 200 people have been evacuated from the combat zone by buses and personal transport. Over the course of 24 hours, several thousand people have left the shelling zone by personal transport with our help…» — said the acting governor of the Kursk region Alexey Smirnov. As local resident Nadezhda says, to be evacuated, you need to call 112. «You leave a request for evacuation and your full name. They arrived at 5 a.m. They either evacuate you in their car or with an escort.»

Kursk Oblast has begun accepting evacuees. Over the course of the night, more than 2,500 temporary accommodation points were set up in the region, where 302 people are currently staying. Specialists from the State Legal Bureau will work with people at the temporary accommodation points, providing consultations on pension payments, benefits, and document processing. Psychologists are also working with those who have arrived. Oryol Oblast has joined in accommodating people. As Governor Andrei Klychkov reported, the first group of evacuated residents of border areas has already been accommodated in the region.

Meanwhile, many people are offering their help with accommodating evacuees on social networks. Caring citizens are offering housing not only in regions close to Kursk, but throughout Russia. Someone is offering help with work: «Novosibirsk Oblast. Iskitim. I can advise you on where to look for work, look at vacancies.»

The situation in the border settlements of Kursk Oblast is still unstable. Many people still cannot get in touch with their loved ones and relatives.
