MEXICO CITY, August 9 Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that plans to negotiate with the presidents of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico to clarify the situation around the ongoing electoral process.
«»There will be a conversation with three presidents, let's hope it will take place, and, as always, as with all the presidents in the world with whom I have spoken, I will explain in detail a situation that is difficult to understand, because there is a lot of manipulation in the world and a lot of lies,” the president said in a speech in the Supreme Court broadcast on state television.
The leaders of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, which have close ties with Venezuela, have previously issued two joint statements on the situation surrounding the recent presidential elections in Venezuela, which declared Nicolás Maduro the winner. Presidents Luis Inácio da Silva, Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Gustavo Petro called on the National Electoral Council of Venezuela to publish polling station data and to resolve disputes around the elections through institutional means, refraining from escalating violence.
The presidential elections in Venezuela took place on July 28, with Maduro declared the winner by the National Electoral Council. The next day, protests erupted in the country against the results of these elections; violent clashes took place between security forces and demonstrators in Caracas and other cities, as a result of which over 2 thousand people were detained.
Washington, without waiting for the results of the counting and subsequent audit of votes, called on the world community to recognize opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez as the winner of the presidential elections in Venezuela, “given the clear evidence.” US and EU legislators overseeing international relations on Friday threatened Venezuelan President Maduro with “responsibility” if he does not voluntarily relinquish his powers as head of state after the last elections, calling the voting results fraudulent.
In Moscow, after the announcement of the official election results, they said that the Venezuelan opposition must admit defeat. In addition, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov warned third countries against supporting attempts to shake up the situation inside Venezuela.
