ULAN-UDE, August 14. Two tourists fell off a cliff in the Barguzinsky district of Buryatia while running away from a bear. One of them died and the other was injured, the regional Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported on its Telegram channel.
«According to preliminary data, the men were relaxing on the shore of Chivyrkuisky Bay in one of the remote bays, where they arrived by boat. A bear came out of the forest towards them. Fleeing from the wild animal, the tourists fell off a cliff. One of them died, the second received injuries of varying severity,» the report says.
It is noted that an investigative task force has left for the scene. A detailed inspection of the scene will be conducted, eyewitnesses will be interviewed. Based on the results of the investigation, a procedural decision will be made.
As reported in the Telegram channel of the Zabaikalsky National Park «Zapovednoye Podlemorye», the incident occurred on Wednesday at about 10 am (5.00 Moscow time). Two tourists from Irkutsk went to the shore of Zmeinaya Bay in search of mushrooms and pine cones.
«According to one of the participants in the incident, they noticed a bear on the way, got scared and ran, then jumped off a cliff into the water. One of them died (crashed), the second with a broken collarbone was taken by employees of «Zapovednoye Podlemorye» to the Barguzinskaya Central Regional Hospital, he was given first aid,» the report says.
According to preliminary data from the directorate of the specially protected natural area, «no traces of a bear were found at the site,» the Burprirodnadzor (a service under the republic's Ministry of Natural Resources) reported. They noted that the incident occurred on the territory of a federal reserve, which is a natural habitat for wild animals and where they are under special state protection.
