MOSCOW, August 14 The US Justice Department is considering breaking up Google after a Washington court ruled last week that the company intentionally acted as a monopolist in the Internet search engine market and thus violated antitrust law, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.
As the agency points out, this could be Washington's first attempt to dismantle the company for illegal monopolization since the unsuccessful efforts to break up Microsoft two decades ago.
«A rare attempt to break up Alphabet Corp.'s Google is one of the options the Justice Department is considering following a landmark court ruling that found the company had monopolized the online search market, according to people familiar with the discussions,» the agency reported.
Less stringent options include forcing Google to share more data with rivals and measures to prevent it from gaining an unfair advantage in its artificial intelligence products, the people said.
If the Justice Department moves forward with its breakup plan, the most likely units to seize would be the Android operating system and the Chrome web browser, the people said. One of the people added that officials are also considering forcing a sale of the AdWords platform, which the company uses to sell text ads.
