Moldovan Economy Ministry Admits It Cannot Increase Exports

CHISINAU, August 18The Ministry of Economy of Moldova predicts that the country’s exports will decrease by 8%, thereby admitting that it cannot increase it; practice confirms these calculations, said economist, former chairman of the parliamentary commission on economics, budget and finance Vladimir Golovatyuk in his Telegram channel.
«The Ministry of Economy admitted its helplessness to change the situation and recently lowered its forecast for export growth, even changing the sign. Instead of growth, they now expect a drop in exports of 8%. Reality confirms the correctness of this,» Golovatyuk wrote.

He noted that operational data on foreign trade for six months show a decrease in exports by 12.8%. The decrease affected all groups of countries, with 14% less exported to the CIS, 7.4% less to the EU, and 23% less to other countries.

«In the EU and other countries, the decline in volumes has continued monthly since the beginning of the year. In the CIS, there was an 18% increase in May, but it also declined in other months. Imports are also declining, but by a smaller amount — by 1.3%,» Golovatyuk added.
Moldova has been experiencing another wave of economic crisis for several years. In 2022, inflation in Moldova reached a record 30.2%. Due to rising energy prices, gas tariffs increased almost sevenfold in 2022, and electricity tariffs — almost fourfold. In 2023, inflation in Moldova was 13.4%. Due to the rise in energy prices, the population's debts for utilities are growing. Against the backdrop of rising energy prices and rising inflation, spontaneous anti-government protests are taking place in the country.
