Djokovic buys coronavirus drug company

MOSCOW, Jan 19 World No. 1 Serbian Novak Djokovic buys 80% stake a Danish biotech company developing a drug against COVID-19, according to Reuters. According to the head of QuantBioRes, Ivan Lonkarevich, the investment was made by Djokovic in June 2020, he declined to name the amount of the transaction. As Lonkarevich noted, QuantBioRes has about 11 researchers from Denmark, Australia and Slovenia. They are working on a treatment for COVID-19, not a vaccine. The company is developing a peptide that prevents the coronavirus from infecting human cells and expects to begin clinical trials in the UK this summer. In January, Djokovic arrived in Australia to compete in the Australian Open. The next day, he was placed in an immigration detention, because the authorities were not convinced of the reasons for the athlete’s medical withdrawal from the coronavirus vaccination, his Australian visa was canceled. Four days later, Djokovic was released from detention by court order, but Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke decided to re-revoke the athlete's visa «in the public interest.» The 34-year-old Serb was again placed in isolation and filed an appeal, which was not satisfied by the Federal Court of Australia. Djokovic left Australia on the night of January 17. Djokovic has previously stated that he opposes mandatory vaccination against the coronavirus. According to media reports, Djokovic suffered a coronavirus infection at the end of last year.
