Archival photoMOSCOW, Feb. 1 Dialogue between Russia and the West is possible only on the basis of the common values of Christianity, Vladimir Legoyda, chairman of the Synodal Department for Church Relations with Society and the Media of the Moscow Patriarchate, said in an interview with RIA Novosti. «Peace is only possible on the basis of common values, you need to look for them and rely on them in dialogue. For dialogue with the West, such values can be Christian, there is no other place to get them,» he told the agency, answering questions about geopolitical tensions between the West and Russia.
The Russian Orthodox Church spoke about the conditions for restoring the dialogue between Russia and Europe Moscow, in particular, demands from its Western partners legal guarantees of refusing further eastward expansion of NATO, joining the Ukrainian bloc, and establishing military bases in post-Soviet countries. The proposals also contain a clause on the non-deployment of NATO strike weapons near Russia's borders and the withdrawal of alliance forces in Eastern Europe to the positions of 1997. At the end of January, the United States and NATO sent to Moscow written responses to Russia's proposals on security guarantees. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow is studying them.
