The Emblem of the World Health OrganizationZURICH, Feb. 2 A subspecies of the omicron coronavirus strain BA.2 found in 57 countries, according to a weekly report from the World Health Organization (WHO), citing the international GISAID virus genome database. The «omicron» has several subspecies: BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2 and BA.3. As previously stated by the Danish Serum Institute, scientists have found that the BA.2 subspecies of «omicron» is significantly more infectious than the original BA.1 strain, but the vaccine reduces the risk of transmission of the virus. According to the institute, the BA.2 subspecies was discovered earlier this year and quickly became the dominant variant in Denmark, with a 39% risk of an infected family member being infected compared to 29% for the original omicron. The WHO reports that the relative increase number of BA.2 subvariants differing from BA.1 by some mutations, including the spike protein, has been observed in many countries.» Sequences designated BA.2 have been submitted to GISAID to date from 57 countries, with a weekly proportion of BA. 2 compared to other omicron sequences has increased by more than 50% in several countries over the past six weeks,” the report states.
