The «Committee against Torture» (CPT) appealed to the Prosecutor General's Office and the Investigative Committee with a request to check the statements of the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov to the founder of the Committee, a member of the Human Rights Council Igor Kalyapin, a columnist for Novaya Gazeta Elena Milashina, Novaya Gazeta herself and TV channel «Rain» *. Human rights activists asked the Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov and the head of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin to assess Kadyrov's statements, and also to check his words to resolve the issue of initiating a criminal case. The CPT emphasized that they had previously encountered the fact that the statements of the head of Chechnya «were perceived as an endorsement or a call for illegal actions.»
“Statements made against the Committee Against Torture, the independent media outlets Dozhd and Novaya Gazeta, journalist Elena Milashina and HRC member Igor Kalyapin go beyond the permissible and legal, they can lead to tragic consequences not only for these organizations and specific people, but for the entire Russian society,”
