"The declaration of a state of emergency reflects the serious danger and threat to the safety of residents due to ongoing demonstrations and highlights the need for support from other jurisdictions and levels of government", Watson said.
The mayor also noted that the introduction of such a regime provides «great flexibility» of the administration. On Sunday, Watson said that the situation in the city center amid ongoing protests from truckers was out of control. Large-scale protests against coronavirus restrictions have continued in many Canadian cities since January 29 initiated by Canadian truckers. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau changed his residence amid these events, leaving Ottawa for security reasons.
