Unsubdued France party leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon MOSCOW, 12 Feb. The United States has lost its dominant position on the world stage and is now trying to use the situation around Ukraine in its own interests. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the Unsubdued France party, shared this opinion on the France 2 TV channel.
"In the current crisis situation, the United States cannot decide who to consider as its main adversary — China or Russia <…> And what does the US do in the end? They want Ukraine to be accepted into NATO. We, the French, don’t care about this", the politician said.
When asked by a journalist who he considers the aggressor, NATO or Russia, Mélenchon replied: «NATO, without a doubt.» He also noted that Russia is moving troops within its territory, while NATO is trying to prevent this, contrary to international legal order. In recent months, relations between Russia and the West have become even more tense. Washington and Brussels accuse Moscow of preparing an «invasion of Ukraine» and pulling Russian troops to the border with a neighboring state. Joe Biden told other Western leaders last night that «Russia will launch a physical offensive as early as February 16th.» However, the president's interlocutors were skeptical about the US intelligence, the newspaper Politico writes. Against this background, NATO is strengthening its presence near Russian borders. On the eve it became known that the United States was additionally transferring 3,000 troops to Poland and sent four destroyers to Europe. Russia rejects all claims and reminds that Kiev does not comply with the Minsk agreements: the Ukrainian authorities have concentrated half of the army’s personnel near the line of contact and are firing at militias from prohibited weapons. The Kremlin and the Foreign Ministry have repeatedly noted that the goal of the «aggression» stories is to build up a foreign group near the Russian borders. They also explained that the main reason for the escalation is the actions of the United States and the alliance, which are pumping weapons to Ukraine, thereby pushing it towards military adventures.
