Three Ways to Reduce Salt Intake

How to spice up and flavor your meals without adding salt.

Salt is not considered a very useful product and should be consumed very little. However, few people control the rate. To do this, there are several ways that will help to reduce salt in food, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to Channel 24.

You may not think about how much salt you consume daily. But if you start measuring it, you will be very surprised. Here are some ideas on how to spice up your dishes and give them flavor without adding salt.

Caramelize the onion

You can caramelize the onion instead of salting it. To do this, cut it lengthwise into thin strips. Add to the pan a tablespoon of unsalted butter or a dab of olive oil. When the pan is hot, fry them, stirring, until softened.

Cook over medium heat for at least 1 hour, depending on the amount of onion you're dealing with. Time may vary. The caramelized onion will turn golden brown. You don't need to add sugar or honey. Natural sugar onions will do the trick.

You can mix onions with sour cream, cream cheese and black pepper to your liking. Then you will get a paste that is perfect for bread or crackers. You can also use caramelized onions  ;as an accompaniment to hamburgers, mashed potatoes, or any meat on the grill.

Marinate the meat

To improve the taste of meat without adding salt, you should marinate it for at least 1 hour. Mix olive oil, balsamic vinegar, a pinch of lemon and a few peeled garlic cloves.

Another marinade that can be used for meat is to mix Greek yogurt with various spices such as paprika, thyme, garlic, pepper and parsley, and then add a few drops of lemon juice.

Combine all the ingredients well and brush the meat with the resulting marinade. Leave to marinate for at least 2 hours before placing the meat in the oven or on the grill.

Use fresh herbs

Cook with fresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme, oregano, parsley, and sage. They will give a great aroma and improve the taste of your food in general. The herbs can be seasoned with broths and soups.

When cooking potatoes out of the oven, drizzle with a little olive oil and a teaspoon of chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, or both.
