Chess player Karjakin, who supported the special operation, was suspended for six months

MOSCOW, 21 Mar. Russian grandmaster Sergei Karyakin, who supported the special operation in Ukraine, was disqualified for six months by the ethics commission of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), according to the official website of the organization. Earlier, Karyakin published a statement on Twitter in which he supported the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin to conduct a special operation in Ukraine. Sanctions against the Russian will deprive him of the opportunity to participate in the Candidates Tournament, which should be held from June 16 to July 7, 2022.

"Sergey Karyakin was found guilty of violating article 2.2.10 of the FIDE code of ethics, he was banned for six months to participate as a player in any FIDE rated chess competition. The punishment comes into effect from the date of this decision — March 21, 2022", the statement says.

«Karjakin's statements about the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine have caused a significant number of reactions on social networks and elsewhere, to a large extent negative in relation to the opinions expressed by him,» the ten-page document says, where the commission explains the reasons and legal basis for its decision.
