MOSCOW, April 22, Alexander Sergeev. Russian tennis players banned from Wimbledon harms world tennis, said the head of the Ministry of Sports Oleg Matytsin.
"Suspension of tennis players? This is a detriment to world tennis. This decision caused a split in the world of tennis. The game should show a gentlemanly attitude, but politics intervened here", he told reporters after a meeting with the ambassadors of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
The organizers of Wimbledon, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, did not allow Russians and Belarusians on Wednesday to participate in the current draw due to the situation in Ukraine. In all other competitions of the ATP men's association and the WTA women's association, Russian tennis players can participate. The Wimbledon tournament in 2022 will be held from June 27 to July 10.
