Archive photoCHISINAU, May 3.The 5+2 format for the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict has ceased to be functional due to the aggravation of relations between Ukraine and Russia, said Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration of Moldova Oleg Serebrian. Earlier, Ukraine temporarily suspended the activities of military observers in the peacekeeping operation on the Dniester. According to the Odessa agreements of 1998, Ukraine joined the peacekeeping operation in Transnistria, sending 10 officers as military observers. OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said at a briefing in Chisinau at the end of March that it is still difficult to discuss when and under what conditions the next meeting in the 5+2 format will take place.

The vice-premier added that Chisinau would not now propose to change the format of negotiations, because he did not know how the balance of power in the region would change after the completion of the Russian special operation. Transnistria, 60% of the inhabitants of which are Russians and Ukrainians, sought secession from Moldova even before the collapse of the USSR, fearing that Moldova would join Romania on the wave of nationalism. In 1992, after a failed attempt by the Moldovan authorities to solve the problem by force, Transnistria became virtually a territory not controlled by Chisinau. Chisinau and Tiraspol are participating in the negotiations on the Transnistrian settlement in the «5+2» format as parties to the conflict, Russia, Ukraine, the OSCE — as mediators, the European Union and the United States — as observers.
