Archive photoSTEPANAKERT, June 3 The settlement of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh is impossible in the foreseeable future due to serious contradictions in the positions of the authorities of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and Azerbaijan, NKR State Minister Artak Beglaryan said in an interview with RIA Novosti. «In the foreseeable future, a comprehensive settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem seems impossible, since there are serious contradictions in the positions of Artsakh and Azerbaijan — they are diametrically opposed,» Beglaryan said. He stressed that the main difference is that for Azerbaijan this is a matter of «prestige, ambitions», and for the residents of Karabakh — «a matter of life and death, their existence and a matter of historical justice.» The parties made several attempts to conclude a truce, but the tripartite agreement reached on the night of November 10 was successful. With the mediation of Moscow, Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed to a complete ceasefire and exchange of prisoners and bodies of the dead. Yerevan also handed over to Baku the Kelbajar and Lachin regions, as well as part of the Aghdam region, which since 1994 have been under the control of the unrecognized NKR. In addition, Russian peacekeepers have been stationed in the region.
