From prince to monster: the story of a Ukrainian who paid for his work with Navka

Anastasia PaninaSport correspondentAll materials30 years ago, in Albertville, the Soviet school of figure skating had the first ever Olympic singles champion, Viktor Petrenko. 30 years later, his name is again on the front pages and in the top news. The thing is that the ex-skater of Ukrainian origin performs in Tatiana Navka's Russian ice show «The Scarlet Flower» — it is taking place in Sochi these days. For the role of Nastenka's father in a fairy tale adapted for an ice performance, 53-year-old Petrenko was obstructed by the Ukrainian Olympic Committee and the Ukrainian Figure Skating Federation. He was even expelled from this very federation. Sport tells the story of Viktor Petrenko, who suddenly found himself a stranger among his own. Viktor Petrenko is from Odessa. His parents are ordinary people without an artistic and sports background, and little Vitya had, perhaps, not a single chance to become an Olympic champion in men's single skating. If not for one circumstance — in childhood he had poor health. The doctor recommended that parents go in for sports as hardening, so they chose figure skating.
