File photoUN, Oct 13 First Deputy Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky called «democracy at gunpoint» the results of voting in the UN General Assembly on an anti-Russian resolution that does not recognize referendums in the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. A two-thirds vote of those who voted for and against was required to pass a resolution. Abstentions and those who did not vote were not counted. 143 countries voted for the resolution, against were the Russian Federation, Belarus, North Korea, SAR, Nicaragua. 35 countries abstained. Earlier, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that the United States and its allies carried out an unprecedented campaign of blackmail and «arm-twisting» against the countries of the «global South» to vote for the resolution.

On Wednesday, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution of Western countries that does not recognize referendums and calls on all countries, international organizations and UN specialized structures not to recognize the changes status of «Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions of Ukraine». Also in the text there is a call not to recognize the accession of four regions to the Russian Federation. In addition, Moscow is being urged to immediately withdraw its forces from Ukraine. The document expresses «commitment to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.» Moscow is condemned for allegedly «organizing referendums» and «an attempt to annex» the DPR, LPR and two regions. The West, not recognizing referendums on joining Russia, is showing double standards, Russian Permanent Representative Vasily Nebenzya pointed out earlier in the UN Security Council, recalling the recognition of Kosovo. There are other examples in history of the recognition by the West of the separation and annexation of territories without the consent of the states to which they belonged. Texas seceded from Mexico in 1836 and then became part of the United States; in 1990 and 1991, Slovenia and Croatia held referendums on independence from Yugoslavia without the consent of its authorities and were recognized; in 1991, referendums on independence from the USSR were held in Estonia, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan — against the will of the Soviet leadership and the entire Soviet people, who spoke in an all-Union referendum in favor of preserving the Union; and during the unification of the FRG and the GDR, no one asked the opinion of the population at all — the absorption of East Germany by West took place without a referendum. At the same time, the results of referendums within the Western countries themselves are ignored. In 2017, 90% of the inhabitants of the autonomy voted for the independence of Catalonia from Spain, after which Madrid began large-scale repressions against supporters of independence. At the end of 2017, the inhabitants of the Italian Veneto and Lombardy demanded greater autonomy from Rome in referendums, but the process of granting new powers from the central authorities stalled. Iran and nine other countries did not vote on the anti-Russian resolution in the UN General Assembly
