ECtHR awarded 53,500 euros to seven Russians for being kept in metal cages in courts

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) awarded 53,500 euros to seven Russians who were kept in metal cages in courts. The human rights project «Axioma» drew attention to the decision.

The Strasbourg court found that the rights of prisoners from Krasnoyarsk, Kazan, Izhevsk, St. Petersburg, Syktyvkar and Saratov were violated in accordance with Article 3 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. The decision also states that the practice of using metal cages in courtrooms has been recognized by the ECtHR as an insult to human dignity.

In 2019, the government refused to remove the cages from the courtrooms, arguing that this was due to security concerns.

In June, Vladimir Putin allowed not to execute the decisions of the ECHR made after March 15, the date of Russia's exclusion from the Council of Europe.
