Kryukov, like the other defendants, was detained in Moscow in March 2018, a few days before the presidential elections. Then he was 19 years old, he came from Gelendzhik and studied in the second year of the Russian State University of Justice. After his arrest, he was expelled.

In 2020, Kryukov was sentenced to six years in a penal colony on charges of creating an “extremist community” (Part 1 of Article 282.1 of the Criminal Code). Real terms were assigned to three more defendants, five more received suspended sentences.

According to investigators, the goal of the New Greatness movement was «uncontested participation in popular uprisings, revolutionary actions, in clashes with representatives of the current regime in Russia.» To do this, the activists arranged several trips out of town for training in shooting and throwing «Molotov cocktails», investigators say.

The accusation was based on the testimony of informant Ruslan D., who, during offline meetings of activists who met in telegram chats, suggested that they create a political organization and write a charter. There are two other witnesses in the case who also turned out to be informants.

During the investigation, the defendants themselves said that they only discussed politics in chats, put up leaflets and participated in protest actions, mostly coordinated. At the first interrogations, all the detainees, except for Ruslan Kostylenkov, said that they did not set out to overthrow the government, and they did not believe that this was possible.

Student Kryukov was in a pre-trial detention center from the moment of detention. During the investigation, he, demanding to soften the measure of restraint, went on a hunger strike and opened his veins in court together with Kostylenkov.
