Gas prices in Germany will rise by 112 percent, study shows

BERLIN, Dec 25 growth in gas and electricity prices by 112 percent and 44 percent, according to Verifox market research published by Handelsblatt.

electricity consumers will pay an average of 44 percent more than in the fall of 2021, when energy prices began to skyrocket. In the case of gas, even an increase of 112 percent is expected,» the newspaper writes.

To partially relieve the burden on consumers, the federal government introduces a price cap on electricity and gas in March, which will also affect January and February retrospectively. After that, households will pay a maximum of 40 eurocents per kilowatt-hour, and this price will apply to 80 percent of the energy consumed. In the case of gas, the price ceiling will be 12 eurocents per kilowatt-hour of energy generated from gas ($1.30 per cubic meter of gas).

But this will only slightly mitigate the sharply increased costs of electricity and gas, Verifox noted.

According to the company's research, an average family with an electricity consumption of 4,000 kilowatt-hours will have to pay an average of 1,764 euros from January to the end of the year. At the same time, the price ceiling will ensure a suspension of price growth by only five percent.

In the case of gas, the effect of the price ceiling will be more pronounced, but on average, one household will still spend twice as much as two years ago (1457 instead of 894 euros), and the price ceiling will only save 5.6 euro cents from the average price of 17.6 euro cent per kilowatt-hour (0.60 from $1.92 per cubic meter of gas). In addition, suppliers will charge the end user with a fee for passing electricity through the country's networks, which will increase the annual bill by 57 euros on average.
Verifox is a product of the media group ProSiebenSat.1. The platform calculates prices for customers who want to conclude a profitable contract with an energy supplier. The portal, in its current study, took into account the increase in municipal tariffs of 700 gas suppliers and 800 electricity suppliers. In addition, the prices of the 30 most important supra-regional companies supplying electricity and gas are included in the calculation.
After the start of a special military operation in Ukraine, the West stepped up sanctions pressure on Russia, which led to an increase in prices for electricity, fuel and food in Europe and the United States. As President Vladimir Putin has pointed out, the policy of containing and weakening Moscow is a long-term strategy for the United States and its allies, and the restrictions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy.
